Also, sizes are being shrunk for the so-called vanity sizing epidemic. Don't believe me? Just go try on your usual size in a vintage dress, chances are you won't even be able to get it past your knees. I know because I try on vintage stuff at the thrift store all the time. Yes, Marilyn Monroe was a size 12, but in today's dress sizes she would be a 4 or 6. Vanity sizing happens to be a very potent marketing tool. I saw it ALL the time when I worked in retail. If a lady who is normally a size 8 in our store could suddenly squeeze into a 6, it didn't matter if the item had a pink fur collar or blinking lights all over it, she almost always bought it. And the opposite was also true. At Ann Taylor we once got in the most darling skirt ever, seriously everyone who came into our store just adored this skirt but it ran a bit tight and no one EVER wanted to go up a size. In the end we clearanced out the skirt and it was such a shame because no matter how much everyone loved it, they wouldn't buy it because of some dumb number on a tag.
So size really doesn't matter. Not even a little bit. But what does matter is fit. Just ignore the made-up number on the tag and start trying stuff on. I routinely buy things that are not my "usual" sizes because they fit. See the sweater I'm wearing today? It's a 16. Not my usual size, but who cares? I love it.
Happy Friday and Veteran's Day!
So last night I was shopping at Target and I saw the dress that you wore a few posts down on the clearance rack. I would normally not pay any attention to it but I remembered you wore it with your brown boots. So I bought it and am sporting it today, So yeah I think Target should sponsor your blog.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a good post! I, too, get caught up in vanity sizing. I got a vintage skirt that was a size 6 and another more modern skirt, also a 6. The vintage skirt is a bit tight but I suck my gut in and wear it, and feel guilty for eating because all I am thinking is, "what's wrong with me? How could I be too fat for a 6! I have really let myself go!" but the other more modern size 6 is a bit loose. Makes no sense and yet that little tag makes me want to become bulemic. Haha.
ReplyDeleteretail clothing in a 4 typically fit, but when I sew from my vintage patterns I'm an 18, it would seriously be easier on every woman looking for the right size if we'd just switch to tags that had the actual measurements on them, lol!
ReplyDeletethis post is so perfect girl! and so very true. love it!

So true. I like shopping at at Express because they size big. These stores need to stop messing with our minds!
ReplyDeleteErin, glad to help. I love that dress!
ReplyDeleteJamie, I know! Vintage stuff is tiny!
Mandi, yeah measurements would be a lot easier.
TJ, aww thanks!
Marly, I have certain stores that I shop at just because I know their clothes run big and I can wear a smaller size. Silly huh?
Great outfit! You look chic and sexy. Love everything about it.

Sizing is so frustrating. I agree that women's clothes should just have measurements like men's do.
