Party Animals

New Year's Eve is sort of a crap holiday if you have kids. (Actually, come to think of it, all holidays are a crap deal for parents. What the???) Really, who wants to stay up late trying to party with a toddler? We initially planned to just stay at home (whoo-freakin-hoo) so that we could put Shye to bed at her normal bedtime. But then my friend Jamie invited us over and I wanted to go but I was stumped as to what to do with Shye. Luckily Jamie has a toddler herself and suggested the brillant idea of ringing in the New Year on Eastern Time.

So on New Year's Eve we watched the Times Square festivities live which made me feel a bit more like the New Yorker I wish I was and we called it a night at 10:05 on the dot.

Basically we are total party animals. Just on Eastern Time.

  1. I think that New Years Eve is the worst holiday as a parent. You can never find a baby sitter, everything goes really late, and most parties involve alcohol, all things that just don't work out well with kids. I've really had to change my view of what a good NYE is. Yours sounds great!

  2. As your kids get older you can make it fun. We do NY's time as well, though I wish we could do like Greenland and be done at 9:00... anyway, as my kids have gotten older, we do our family party. It's super cheesy but fun: I make simple party foods (because, let's face it, my kids will NOT eat feta or anything fun- they didn't even like the spinach dip) and we talk about having good manners at parties as we eat together. Then we have a dance party- which is the best part. We try to teach them some moves (though I must say that's Mike's department more than me), and since we're allowed to now, we do fireworks and then send them to bed.

  3. Hey! I was ringing in the new year at the same time as you. I was in bed by 9:30 PST.

  4. Oh, sooo smart! When we lived in California we did the same thing! Now that we're in Va, we told ourselves we were celebrating on London time, which was 7pm EST :)
