Dear Emily Post

When people say my daughter is pretty/cute/adorable/gorgeous/etc., which of the following is the appropriate response?

a) Thank you
b) I know, right?
c) Really? You think so?
d) none of the above

a) Seems like the most obvious response but I think it sounds like I'm taking credit for her prettiness. I mean really, when do you ever thank someone for a compliment meant for someone else?
b) I thought that maybe just agreeing with the person paying the compliment would be better but it actually comes off sounding even more smug than option a.
c) This kind of response makes people think that I don't love my daughter.
d) Is what I'm left with. I usually just kinda smile and nod my head.

Any suggestions?

Sincerely,
a totally stumped new momma

  1. Just say thank you (because your baby can't say thank for herself yet) and then say I know she is. :) That's what I always do.

  2. I always just say "thank you" or "thank you, we think so" or something like that.

  3. you say.. I know she's way cuter than yours... jk...

You can take some credit or at least a portion of it as she started off with good jeans. I would go with either of the mentioned comments.

  4. Dale always says" was there ever any doubt? I mean, look at the parents." I guess he doesn't mind coming off as smug :) Do what suits you.

  6. Take the credit. She wouldn't look good if her Momma didn't look good. :)

  7. say "none of your business" and walk away. Honesty is always the best policy you know :)

  8. I think saying thank you is fine since she can't do it herself.

Because, you DO deserve credit. :-)
