Quirks

Some people call them eccentric. Others say that they are quirky. The medical establishment has named it OCD. I say lets all stop being politically correct and call it what it is: crazy.

Yep, I'm talking about people and all their lovely quirks.

Now to be fair, EVERYBODY has their little quirks. Like, for example, my feet act as a thermostat for the rest of my body. I like my feet to be cool at all times or else I feel hot. So I wear sandals pretty much all year round and I sleep with my feet poking out from under the blanket. Quirk satisfied. And no one was inconvenienced by my need for cold feet. I kinda pride myself in being a laid-back, just-go-with-the-flow kind of person. And thank goodness for that because my husband is THE king of quirks. He has a little rituals and systems for everything. For example, he is totally OCD about his gas mileage. He obsessively checks the air pressure in his tires, accelerates veeeerry slowly, and pretty much lets his car coast down every incline in neutral. If there is a red light half a mile away he puts his car into neutral and lets it roll to stop. (By the way, rolling to a stop saves the breaks too.) He refuses to carry any more than 5lbs of stuff in his car for fear that it will mess with his precious gas mileage. Every time he fills up he resets his odometer to 0 and then whips out his phone so he can calculate how he is doing. I've gotten used to it...but my eyes do tend to sorta glaze over and I go into a trance whenever we are in the car together.

But my point is he is VERY quirky. And I am not. Or at least I thought so.

The following is a conversation we had a few days ago at Taco Bell.
Back story: We always share a soda since neither of us can finish one on our own. After placing the order I filled up the soda and got a straw while he got the food. On our way to the table, he grabbed another straw.

Me: Oh, I already got a straw hon.
Brian: Well, maybe I want my own straw.
Me: Umm...ok. But why?
Brian: Well, you know... so I don't have to suck up all your slobber and goobies.
Me: For real? You know we are married right? We've shared a LOT more than slobber and goobies. I mean, I am pregnant you know.
Brian: That's different. Right now I'm eating and I don't want to suck up chunks of food that you might have accidentally backwashed into your straw when all I want is a sip of soda.
Me: Wow. Well first of all I don't think I've backwashed food into my drink since I was like, I don't know, three years old. And secondly, you do realize that even if I did backwash food into the drink that you would still suck it up even if you had a separate straw.
Brian (thinks for a minute): Well, food is heavy and will sink to the bottom so I will drink from the top.
Me: OH... MY... GOSH! You are so weird!
Brian: Who cares? So I want my own straw? Why do you care so much?
Me: Because you can't fit two straws through the lid.
Brian: So? Take the lid off. (And he proceeds to take the lid off)
Me: NOOOOO!!!! I have to have a lid!!
Brian: Why?
Me: Cuz...well...I don't know.....I like having a lid....I HAVE TO HAVE A LID DANGIT!!!!
Brian: And I'm the weird one?

How about you? Got any quirks?

  2. Yep, I had to figure that one out too.

When you are in a new post, click on "Post Options" and then click the button for "Press Enter for line breaks."

That should fix it. Let me know if it doesn't.

  3. Seriously? Shawna, you can't become quirky....there can't be TWO quirky people in the household and we know that BRIAN holds the award for most quirky person EVER! As I'm reading this post, I'm totally picturing Brian talking in this conversation......Sorry you have to deal with that everyday. the faye's are just some quirky people......with the exception of me.....Mike will agree of course=) Ha ha

  4. Haha...too many to count or describe. Nephi and I do the same thing (share a drink) and he only insists on his own straw if one of us is sick. When we don't feel like a drink and we both get water he doesn't put a lid/straw on his and I must have one! It's funny because I love it when Nephi picks up on my quirks and will prepare it for me the way I like it (like if he gets me my water).

  5. Thanks Karen!

Franz, the Fayes really are the quirkiest family!

Brianne, Brian never converts to my quirks but I have converted to many of his.

  6. I'll take your husbands driving quirk and raise you one. Not only does Aaron try to have really good gas mileage but he keeps a detailed record of all of our mileage. That entails every time we stop to get gas he records how many miles he went on that tank of gas, the total amount of miles on the car, how many gallons of gas were put in, and how much was spent. Then he '0' out his odometer for the next trip. I kid you not that he has these records going back about 10 years. For the first couple of years of our marriage I would make sure to wright all of the numbers on the receipt and give it to him.

  7. I'd have to say he still wins the quirk prize. I mean, after 5 years of marriage and the pending arrival of a wee one, he picks NOW to start using his own straw?

  8. Whoa Marly! That is pretty out of control! There is no way Brian could EVER get me to keep track of it all.

    Karen, no kidding.
