Baby names: the most important decision you will ever make on behalf of your child...after deciding what color to paint the nursery. (Note: apparently, pastel colors are sooo passe. Brown is the color du jour and more importantly, it is gender neutral which is sooo in right now.)
Anyway, baby names. I've been browsing a lot of baby name lists lately and I'm beginning to notice some trends.
For girls I've noticed that retro names are really hot right now. And when I say retro, I mean REALLY retro. Like 1900's retro. Names like: Abagail, Olivia, Isabella, Jane, Charlotte, Ava, Emma, Grace, etc. For the record, I actually don't mind this trend. One of my favorite girl names for a long time was Charlotte. But I have five(!) friends who have named their daughters Charlotte. Thanks a lot ladies. :)
For boys it seems like the most popular names end in either "n" or "er". Like: Ethan, Nixon, Aiden, Linkin, Easton and Tanner, Hunter, Parker, Bridger, etc. Once again, I don't exactly mind this trend, in fact, Aiden was my favorite name for a boy...until I taught a Primary class in which I had three Aidens. And I swear, there were at least 20 Aidens in the whole Primary. During sharing time it was always mayhem and madness whenever the teacher called on an Aiden without specifying the last name.
And oh how I envy those couples who are able to pick a name for their kids with conversations like this:
Wife: Honey, what do you think about Jane for a girl?
Husband: That is beautiful my darling, almost as beautiful as you.
Wife: Ok, so Jane for a girl. And how about Michael for a boy?
Husband: Splendid my dear. Let's get some Taco Bell to celebrate.
Brian and I have been battling it out ever since I saw that plus sign on that pee stick thingy. I have this sneaking suspicion that Brian's strategy is to wear me me out with outrageous names at first so that when he finally suggests a normal name I will pretty much automatically agree.
Brian's favorite names so far? Wolfgang, Lucias, Viggo for boys and Cheyenne and Jewel for girls.
Yep folks, the next five months are going to be some long ones.
I think Cheyenne is his best name yet
ReplyDeleteWe all knew Jewel would be a top contender. You should ask him what nicknames he would give for each name. It never fails that nicknames get used a lot more than original names, unless of course the child gets disciplined a lot. :)
ReplyDeleteI think the solution to your problem is simple.
ReplyDeleteKaren is a fine name.
I am so with the trend now with Ryder and Emma :)
ReplyDeleteMy bf just named her little boy Viggo. I do have to say I don't mind Cheyenne i haven't heard that one in awhile.
@ Erin: Haha! Yeah, you are totally on trend!
ReplyDelete@ Karen: Only if you promise to name your firstborn Shawna if it is a girl or Shawn if it is boy.
@ Jen: If it is Cheyenne, he said he will call her Shy. But I think that throws up an obstacle because of the spelling. See, you can't shorten Cheyenne to Che, unless you want you daughter to think she is named after a Marxist revolutionary. That will only serve to increase my in-laws suspicions that I'm a closet communist.
@ Christin: Yeah, I know. I almost want to agree to it just becuase it is the most normal.
We have been fighting over boys names since we found out we were having another! We have 5 weeks left and can't even discuss names without it turning into a fight! We have 2 boys, you think it would be easy to name of third but apparently not!! Good luck!!
ReplyDeleteAaron won't name a boy with the name ending in an "er". I LOVE the name Viggo, it's Danish. My sister almost used that name because her husband is 1/2 Danish, but named him Thyssen (pronounced Tyson) instead. Oh and my other sister named her little girl Charlotte!! Seriously, naming kids is so hard, just find the first name you both agree on, and then it's settled!
