There was this one time I ran a 5k...

Somehow last Saturday, at what can only be considered an utterly unholy hour,  I found myself lining up for a 5k. As I stood there staring at the start line waiting for the start gun, I tried to remember how I had gotten myself into this situation in the first place. I mean, I absolutely loathe running. Mostly because it makes me feel like I'm going to die and throw up. In that order. I have yet to experience the fabled runner's high. Yet despite all this, for some bizarre reason, I still fancy myself a serious runner. Anyway, so there I stood feeling nervous and queasy and totally questioning my sanity. Thank heavens my niece volunteered to run with me because without her I probably would have given up before the race even started. And speaking of queasiness, what in blazes is up with all the male runners and their tiny short shorts? Seriously, it made me want to wash my eyes with bleach.

Pre-race jitters.

The race itself was pretty boring. Except for the part where we couldn't shake this one guy in the most obnoxious tiny purple shorts. He would pass us, then we would pass him, then he would pass us, and this went on for 20 minutes. Finally, I had had enough of the purple obscenity. I told Brande that we needed to get far enough ahead of him so that he couldn't catch up again, so we sprinted until we thought our legs were going to fall off. It worked. Apparently the only thing I hate more than running is men in tiny purple shorts.

We did it! We beat the Purple Monster!

Our cheer squad.

The whole experience was actually pretty fun.
And by fun, I mean it was terrible and I will probably never do it again.
