Happy Kosovo Independence Day!

(Mom wearing 3-D glasses whilst trying to read a map. Needless, to say we got lost.)
February 17th, it's Kosovo Independence Day!

And if that wasn't reason enough to celebrate it is also the birthday of Fay Luster, aka my mom. In honor of this great dame's birthday I thought would share a little bit about her, 'cause she is just awesome.

(Mom and Jamie looking scared that they won't measure up.)
First of all, my mom is way fun to hang out with. She likes funny movies and romantic comedies. She likes Taylor Swift, the Beatles, and Eminem. She is pretty much like a kid herself. It also helps that she is only 4'10 and often gets mistaken for a child. She also sometimes can't ride certain rides because of her height impairment. Who knew the world was so prejudiced against short people? Anyway, she is really fun...and short.

(Me and mom enjoying our carbs.)
I inherited lots of great things from my mom: my fashion sense, my love of literature and crafts, and my looks. Speaking of looks, you can't take my mom anywhere without her getting hit on by men both young and old...and in one instance, even a woman. No joke. The last time she came out to visit me we went ice-skating and I watched as she sat down on the bleachers and some guy literally came over, sat down next to her and started chatting her up. After a few minutes I had to go and save her by asking her to go buy me some snacks. Like I said, you can't take her anywhere.

(Mom drinking Irn Bru, Scotland's national drink...besides whiskey that is)
My mom is also an alien. No really, she is alien resident. She is from Scotland, you know, the land where is considered manly to go commando while wearing a skirt. The place where they enjoy eating sheep innards and beans on toast. And their national pastime is throwing ginormous logs. A funny people I tell you. Even though she has been here for about 30 years, if you listen closely, she still has a bit of an accent. And every so often, she will drive on the wrong side of the road.
I kid, I kid.

(She likes to practice throwing gang signs)

My mom can, will, and does talk to anybody. To illustrate, when I go the the grocery store it is a three step process: I go to the store, I buy my stuff, I leave. But for my mom, a trip to the grocery store is more like this: go the the store, stop and chat with a random hobo sitting outside the store, listen to the life story of a lady in the cereal isle, swap parenting advice with some harried mother over in the produce section, get hit on by some guy in the freezer isle, and finally on her way out, she will discover that she has the same birthday as the cashier. She will talk to more people in one day than I do in a year. Clearly, I did not inherit this trait.
In short, my mom is the best friend a girl could ask for. And now that I'm having a daughter of my own, I can only hope that I will be half as cool as my mom.

  4. Anonymous, do we share a mother?

Colleen, as kids we would sometimes plead with her "can we pleeeease make it quick and not talk to anyone?" Now I just think it is funny.

    Karen, thanks!

  6. It's been a while since I've read your blog and now that I'm catching up, I'm bummed that I missed wishing your mom a happy birthday! But you are right she is awesome! I've always loved your mom and even though its been years, I think the last time I ran into her was 1999, when I worked at Marie's, I still remember and think of her often, as well as yourself ofcourse, lol!
